LAOS: Day 6 – Houay Xai

We wake up this morning in our room overlooking the Mekong to discover two elephants across the river from us! How cool is that?

It’s another day on the slow boat, however, today our boat is only about half full so there’s plenty of room to move about.

It’s a slightly shorter day today taking about 7 hours to get from Pak Beng to Houay Xai.

We’re staying at the Houay Xai Riverside Hotel and upon checking in meet Noy. He’s an exuberant guy who is exceptionally helpful and is full of information for us. He helps us with some travel arrangements for a few days time and gives us his number in case we run into any trouble. So nice.

We walk into the main part of town and have dinner at the Daauw Home. This is a big homestay that supports local women (usually from the mountains) and their children. Many of the children don’t have fathers and the home provides a home for the kids and their mothers. As you can expect, children run around everywhere and it really feels like a family atmosphere.

The food is fairly average, but the friendliness of the family and their worthy cause more than make up for it.
